‘Taking His Own’

Held like a beast within a cage
By bars of lust and greed and rage
They say I’m free if I hold your hand
I can’t reach while I’m building on the sand.

My worldly umbilical chord
Prevents me walking with the Lord
Please cut me loose from this strangling snare
Let me be free to breath your holy air.

He’s coming soon open you eyes
Lift up your head and look to the skies.
Look to the life the truth and the way
He’s taking his own, today.

The devil levers us apart
By pushing doubt into my heart
But if I close my eyes and trust you blind
For you are love and the truth you’ll always find.

He could arrive back any day
So many ways I’ve gone astray
To see his face tears of joy I’d cry
But would my shame let me look him in the eye

He’s coming soon open you eyes
Lift up your head and look to the skies.
Look to the life the truth and the way
He’s taking his own, today.

Held like a beast within a cage
By bars of lust and greed and rage
I can be free, I hear his voice.
He holds the key but still gives me the choice.

Background

This song was in the early Salt Solution set. Some references here to the second coming but in common with ‘The Straight Furrow‘ majors on the human struggle with our own fickle nature.

For the curious…
Listen to the original recording of ‘Taking His Own’ the 1983 cassette album by Mervyn Sprocket and the Crankshaft Assembly (later to become Salt Solution)

(NB this has been transferred from a cassette and the poor sound quality is only matched by the poor musicianship!)
