‘Rings True’

It’s a fun little game, chasing fame.
What could he do to hype up his name?
Posting a libellous claim,
Parker Baul, he’s at it again.

Appeal to the masses, reason for the few.
It’s a blast going viral. His followers just grew.
Just maybe – it’s true.

He peddles his own brand of news,
Alternative facts, subversive views.
Conspiracy theories, dealing in doubt.
Nobody checks his sources out.

Appeal to the masses, reason for the few.
It’s a blast going viral. His followers just grew.
Just maybe – it’s true.

Tiring of ‘likes’ he’d received,
Cold hard cash can now be achieved.
Scamming his prey from afar.
Click on the link on his fake avatar.

Appeal to the masses, don’t think it through.
You’ll share bank details transfer funds too.
Just maybe it’s true.

Now falsehood he wears as disguise.
His scam plays out, his hacks on the rise.
With deep fake clones to deceive,
Now no one knows what to believe.

Appeal to the masses. Take care what you view.
Hiding on the dark web, he’s targeting you.
But does it ring true?

Background

An unusual collaboration this one. My friend Simon Gardner of The Prognosis had been inspired to write a song about all things worrying about the internet – social media, fake news, scamming, deep fakes and the dark web and was given a quote “Appeal to the masses, reason for the few.” (attributed to Hitler!) by another friend, Alan Clarke. Simon got me involved and I rewrote a few sections, introduced a narrative to the verses and a more direct messages to two of the choruses. The resulting song is my only collaboration on a lyric. (For interest, I have italicised my contributions.)

The song was first performed by The Prognosis on 18th & 19th November, 2022 at the Green Room Theatre in Dorking, UK
