‘Mediterran”

Mediterran’ – swap the blue for the gray.
Mediterran’ – trade the rain for the rays.
Mediterran’ – Mediterran’.
Step off the plane
… into the oven.

Stop work, pens down.
Airport, leave town.
Take off, touch down.
Transfer coast-bound.
Hot night, bus there.
Street lights, town square.
Full swing, lights glare.
Hotel de la Mer.

Full club, dead club, gay club, bar.
Food shop, sweet shop, gift shop, bar.
Full club, dead club, gay club, bar.
Food shop, sweet shop, gift shop, bar.

Mediterran’ – swap the blue for the gray.
Mediterran’ – trade the rain for the rays.
Mediterran’ – Mediterran’.
Step off the plane
… into the oven.

Sun wakes, balcony.
Blue skies, blue sea.
Hot sand, water ski.
Brown tan bodies.
Night time revelry.
See all humanity.
Cheap beer, entry free.
Electricity.

Full club, dead club, gay club, bar.
Food shop, sweet shop, gift shop, bar.
Full club, dead club, gay club, bar.
Food shop, sweet shop, gift shop, bar.

Mediterran’ – swap the blue for the gray.
Mediterran’ – trade the rain for the rays.
Mediterran’ – Mediterran’.
Step off the plane
… into the oven.

End is nearing,
Clouds appearing.
Fly back fearing.
Home for clearing.

Mediterran’ – swap the blue for the gray.
Mediterran’ – trade the rain for the rays.
Mediterran’ – Mediterran’.
Step off the plane
… into the oven.

Theme

I wanted to get the feel of a teenager jetting off for a package holiday on a party island, the likes of Ibiza or Ayia Napa. For that brief carefree age and time between the end of A-levels and results day that triggers university acceptance or rejection.

Background

This was an attempt to collaborate with another member of the now defunct InMusic (originally a kind of Facebook for songwriters and musicians). He had a funky Daft Punk/Chic-style backing track and I wrote these words to go with it. I thought it was probably quite commercial (but I was not able to come up with something vacuous enough to be truly commercial!) His comment was ‘pretty quirky actually you gave it an Ian Dury & The Blockheads kinda vibe… but I’m looking for a younger sound for this one’. So obviously not commercial enough then. After a few years I thought I would rewrite the music whilst trying to keep the summer clubbing vibe. So with this in mind, I couldn’t be bothered to workout a drum pattern for it and so went for a tried and trusted groove – So credit where credit is due: It is Soul2Soul’s ‘Back to Life’ drums on a loop. (We would obviously replace this should we develop the song further.)
