‘Michaelmas Cay’

Marooned for a day on Michaelmas Cay,
Marooned in a sea of turquoise,
Just sand, sea and sky and the Booby bird’s cry.
A wonder for girls and boys.

Come follow me swimming under the sea,
Where rainbows hide when the sky is blue.
Where sponges grow and warm currents flow,
And corals bloom like flowers do.

From canyon and cave the anemones wave.
The pipe and guitarfish join our band.
The shark patrol and each shimmering shoal
Bring a smile to the giant clam.

Fly ‘cross the bay on an eagle ray.
The dolphin jumps to welcome you.
He tickles your toes with his bottle nose.
The clown fish laugh, the turtles too.

Marooned for a day on Michaelmas Cay,
Marooned in a sea of turquoise,
Just sand, sea and sky and the Booby bird’s cry.
A wonder for girls and boys.
A wonder for girls … and boys.

Background

My wife Jill was expecting our first child whilst we were on holiday in Australia and where I fulfilled a lifelong ambition to see the Great Barrier Reef. I was completely captivated by all I saw snorkelling and wanted to somehow capture the experience and all the creatures I had seen. So I later wrote this song as a lullaby for my daughter Chloe who was only seven months old at the time. I played it to no one else until Chloe was old enough to understand it and know that it was hers.
