‘Safe Among the Shadows’
There are many things that are done in darkness
That would never see the light of day.
It’s the fear of capture, it’s the guilty process,
It’s the revelation that you’ve gone astray.
Stake out the house with the milk left out,
And the papers in the door.
Check down the road; there’s no-one about.
The glass hits the kitchen floor.
Then the tumble drier and the stereo
Go to the waiting Transit van.
They stole his pride, and they stole her home,
And they stole the baby’s pram. Are you safe among the shadows?
Indulging in the deeds of darkness.
Safe among the shadows,
The dawn is almost due,
Are you safe among the shadows?
The fire is coming for the dry wood.
Safe among the shadows,
‘Coss time is running out … for you. There are many things that are done in darkness
That would never see the light of day.
It’s the fear of capture, it’s the guilty process,
It’s the revelation that you’ve gone astray.
Leather clad rebels looking for a brawl,
See that the coast is clear.
Spray can slogan on subway wall,
The grammar don’t matter here.
Then they roam the town, find a Asian man,
And decide he’ll take the blame.
‘Coss he wears a turban, and he wears a tan,
So they beat him without shame. There are many things that are done in darkness
That would never see the light of day.
It’s the fear of capture, it’s the guilty process,
It’s the revelation that you’ve gone astray.
Run through the alley where the shadows hide.
In the dark he can follow near.
Another stride and he’s by her side.
Smell her perfume, touch her fear.
Then he turns her round, and he hits and tears,
And he pulls her too the ground.
Then he steal her joy, and he leaves her there,
And she cries until she’s found. There are many things that are done in darkness
That would never see the light of day.
It’s the fear of capture, it’s the guilty process,
It’s the revelation that you’ve gone astray.
Stagger from the pub, through the headlight beams,
“Sorry mate, didn’t see you there.”
Shouting abuse across the village green,
Nick a road sign for a dare.
Then the morning comes and his head is raw,
He can still taste last night’s beer.
See his dirty clothes, and vomit on the floor.
